Designing and building facilities to meet plastics recycling targets

Plastic waste is the essential feedstock for recycling and a key component of a future circular economy. We’re helping our customers to drive a better balance between the production of virgin and renewable plastics, while solutions to collect and use this feedstock continue to evolve and emerge.

We also support them in making strategic decisions – determining where to invest, navigating evolving regulations, selecting adaptable technologies, potential partnerships, reviewing current and future ways of working, as well as supporting master plan development and holistic asset reviews.

From feasibility studies to technology evaluation and scale-up to engineering procurement and construction (EPC) delivery, we work across the entire project development value chain. We collaborate with stakeholders to implement the best solutions for mechanical or advanced recycling applications, including pyrolysis, which is the heating of organic material, such as biomass, in the absence of oxygen.

Our goal is to help support the development of systems and infrastructure that efficiently collect, sort, and reuse plastic waste to create industrial circularity and ultimately, contribute to creating a more sustainable world.

Our expertise in plastic recycling

We implement a broad range of plastic recycling solutions, including mechanical recycling, which turns plastic waste into new materials or products, and advanced recycling, which breaks plastic down to its basic molecules. Our services also cover master-planning, material sorting and handling, advisory and due diligence, regulatory support, and technology evaluation.

Advanced and mechanical recycling
We’re helping customers review and implement proven and novel solutions that ensure plastics can be used again, supporting environmental and sustainability targets.

Advisory services
We support customers in preparing for future investments by offering economic analysis, insights into regulatory trends, waste audits, transport modeling, project funding guidance, and environmental impact assessments.

Master planning support
We review your current asset mix and consider improvements / upgrades and evaluate new asset opportunities. We can also plan for infrastructure integration, transportation logistics and recycling hub development.

Project delivery
We offer end-to-end project support and execution of recycling projects, increasing efficiency through tactics like ‘design one-build many’, and modular and scalable designs.

Material handling
We implement material handling solutions through advanced material manufacture and recovery, plastics processing and sortation, high-volume recycling systems and feedstock transportation (gas/liquid/solid).

Technology evaluation
We have experience with mature and emerging plastic recycling technologies. An abbreviated list includes Plastic Energy, Synova, INEOS Infina, Pure Cycle, Loop.

Plastic recycling experience

We partner with our customers to execute projects that make use of waste plastic and create pathways for circularity.

From 2021 to 2023, we partnered with a customer to expand their advanced recycling capabilities in Europe. Our teams in the UK and the Netherlands led and oversaw the project, providing engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) and engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) services, with support from our Global Integrated Delivery teams in India.

The project’s aim was to transform mixed and used plastic – otherwise destined for incineration or landfill – into recycled oil. This oil serves as an alternative feedstock for polymer production, increasing the use of circular polymers.

By enabling greater access to sustainable materials, the advanced recycling unit helps reduce reliance on virgin resources and supports environmental protection.

We’re partnering with a customer in Europe to develop a flagship plant that produces 100 percent plant-based acid, a key building block for many chemicals and plastics.

This bio-based, fully recyclable polymer offers enhanced barrier performance and thermal properties, with potential applications in the packaging, textiles, and film industries.

We supported the concept development phase and front-end engineering design (FEED) phases for the new plant and are now executing the EPC delivery of this demonstration plant. Together with the customer, we are developing this first of a kind large scale plant and incorporating demo plant insights in development of the design.

We’re collaborating with a US plastic producer to design a material handling system for their incoming waste plastic. This system is a key component of their planned chemical recycling plant, which will process over 200,000 tons per year of cleaned and separated polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene feedstock.

Our scope includes the design of waste sortation and processing solution, covering reception and storage of baled and loose materials, infrared sortation, hot and cold washing, and associated conveying systems.

We’re also providing business case analysis and secondary recovery sorting for glass, aluminium, cardboard, organic materials, and ferrous metals.

We provided due diligence support and technology analysis for a portfolio of recycling plants designed to process post commercial low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) films.

The four process facilities will use various sorting and separation processes and are designed to produce feed materials that meet the FDA’s requirements for a ‘Letter of Non-Objection’ (LNO), enabling the finished product to be used as a feed to film producers for a variety of food applications.

Our role included reviewing technology and equipment selections, as well as flow sheets, mass balances, and the feedstock specifications to assess the likely yields, plant availability and product quality.
