Ambition alone is not enough

Our From Ambition to Reality series proposes new methods for project delivery to meet the greatest infrastructure challenge humanity has ever faced. The series presents five key shifts in approach required to build infrastructure at unprecedented scale and speed.

The level of trust between infrastructure participants has a big impact on whether net zero projects get built, and the acceptance of new ways of delivering projects. So, how do you build trust between stakeholders in critical infrastructure projects?

A new focus on the role of trust

Trust is fundamental to the paradigm shift required for transforming project delivery. It drives the adoption of the five shifts, which, in turn, strengthens stakeholder confidence. Creating the right conditions for this virtuous cycle is essential to delivering the scale of projects needed to achieve net-zero goals.

The paradigm change needle is moving, but too slowly

The transformation of delivery practices is not happening fast enough. Our research indicates a lack of trust between infrastructure participants as a primary reason for this delay.

In addition, 30+ subject matter experts we consulted identified trust as a key factor in achieving better project outcomes, including improved performance on delivery metrics such as schedule and costs.

The impact of trust on CCS in the US

Our expert interviews and a pulse survey of over 4,200 stakeholders found that most are mistrusting, risk adverse, and cautious of carbon capture and storage (CCS). The public has limited knowledge of CCS technology, perceiving moderate levels of risk and benefit. Meanwhile, CCS professionals tend to significantly overestimate public trust in these projects, according to our findings.

About our Princeton partnership

The From Ambition to Reality series is our collaboration with Princeton University’s Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment. We consider how the world can meet the unprecedented infrastructure challenge of climate change.
