Rising to the challenge: Avril’s journey of resilience and leadership
Avril du Plessis’ career spans more than four decades. But it’s more than just a story about time – it’s a story of determination, courage, mentorship, and the power of opportunity.
Growing up in apartheid-era South Africa, Avril faced systemic barriers that sought to limit her ambitions. Education and job opportunities were tightly restricted – especially for women of color. Yet Avril remained determined to build a different future.
A beginning marked by determination
One of her first encounters with workplace discrimination left a lasting impression. After a long commute to Johannesburg to interview for a receptionist position at a construction company, she was denied entry based on race. Devastated, that day could have broken Avril. Instead, she returned home with a reinforced resolve to create her own path.
A turning point – and a mentor who saw potential
A family connection led Avril to an opportunity at an architectural firm where she worked in the typing pool. Her adaptability and work ethic quickly caught the attention of Nigel Townshend, who later established Townshend van der Walt and Partners (TWP Holdings), a company that would eventually become part of Worley.
Nigel saw Avril’s talent beyond job titles or societal constraints. He offered her opportunities to learn, grow and take on responsibilities well beyond her initial role.
After starting as a secretary, Avril quickly took on new responsibilities, including receptionist, accountant, HR assistant and even office driver. As the company grew, so did she. Nigel’s mentorship encouraged her to trust in her abilities and embrace opportunities she had never imagined possible.
Rising through the ranks
Today, Avril is an integral part of our team as an Administrative Services Supervisor in Johannesburg. She supports project and site administrators, bringing expertise across multiple departments, built from years of hands-on experience. Her vast knowledge of our history makes her a trusted advisor and go-to person for guidance and support.
While she describes herself as a ‘Jack of all trades, mistress of none’, her colleagues see her as the heart of Worley Johannesburg.
Avril has contributed broadly during her career, from supporting the establishment of TWP in Australia, to leading a major joint venture project with DRA and navigating complex corporate landscapes. Some of Avril’s proudest achievements represent not just professional successes, but personal triumphs over barriers she once thought were insurmountable.
A legacy of mentorship and empowerment
Avril actively mentor's younger employees, making sure they see no limits to their growth. “I want to see my team grow and achieve more than I have,” she says.
Her colleagues recognize her as a trusted source of guidance and support. Whether she’s training new employees, streamlining complex administrative processes, or providing a steady voice in challenging times, Avril is always there.
Looking ahead with pride
As she nears retirement, Avril reflects on her journey with gratitude. From being denied an opportunity at an office door to becoming a pillar of her team and key figure at Worley, Avril has shown what’s possible when perseverance meets opportunity.
Avril shows that careers are not defined by where you start, but by how far you are willing to go.
